In order to coat the casing of an application roller assigned to a substrate uniformly with a liquid or foamed product in as thin as possible a layer, the product is forced into a distributor pipe by a metering pump in relation to the peripheral speed of the application roller, on which distributor pipe elastic lips are mounted roughly tangentially from opposite surfaces. The lips are elastically pressed together and on to the roller casing on their longitudinal edge facing away from the distributor pipe; the gap between the lips is impinged with the product via bore holes of the distributor pipe supplied by a metering pump.
