The invention relates to a mattress base with transverse supports 9 for placing in a bed frame and as a support for a mattress, in which each transverse support is attached to the support frame of the mattress base by means of a resilient connection piece which is variable in its spring strength, each connection piece having a prestressable compression spring 10. Furthermore, a measuring indicator 86 is arranged in a recess 54 and has a carrier 90 which moves a measuring slide 5 upwards and downwards to determine the measurement values. Provision is made according to the invention for a plate 8 to serve as a stop for the measuring indicator 86 in each longitudinal side piece 2 ahead of the recesses 54, the measuring slide 5 with cams 42 sliding in a guide slot 44 of the plate 8, for each transverse support 9 to be connected centrally on the underside to the support frame 1 by an adjustable transverse holder 111 which is attached to a tensioning housing 117 arranged below the transverse support 9 and opens out into a distancing space which is mounted on the support frame 1 and from which a vertical spacer 103 of constant length projects and opens out into a recess 110 of the transverse support 9. <IMAGE>
