Highly hindered aromatic secondary amines are reacted with organic carbonates of at least one primary alcohol to produce tertiary amines. The alkylation of such secondary amines with dialkyl carbonates in which at least one of the alkyl groups of the dialkyl carbonate is unsubstituted methyl or is an alkyl group having at least two carbon atoms wherein the number one carbon atoms of the alkyl group is attached to two hydrogen atoms, is preferred.
