The invention is based on a method and a portable apparatus for analysing unknown explosives, explosive mixtures and propellant charges except chemical warfare agents. Such a method is characterised according to the invention in that an unknown liquid, solid or paste-like sample, which probably contains explosives, is dissolved together with a defined amount of solvent, is separated by filtration into a solvent-insoluble extract and a solvent-soluble extract, the solvent-soluble extract being subjected, together with available known reference solutions, at least to thin-layer chromatography (TLC) with UV indication which permits identification of all explosives, and the solvent-insoluble extract being subjected to wet-chemical analysis for identifying salts and water-soluble explosives. An appliance of this type is characterised according to the invention by the appliance consisting of a transport container having 3 inserts and the contents thereof, a list of contents, a description, a user manual and a log book, the device having a weight of less than 50 kg.
