Process for reducing the sulphur content of an H2S-containing gas

A process is described for reducing the sulphur content of an H2S-containing gas. The H2S-containing gas is subjected to an oxidative reaction of the H2S to form SO2 according to the Claus reaction and, after cooling, is freed from sulphur compounds by scrubbing with a solvent. The loaded solvent is regenerated and reused. In order to prevent precipitation of elemental sulphur in the solvent circulation, it is proposed to cool a part-stream of the solvent and to separate out sulphur precipitating in the course of this. The process is applicable in particular to Claus exhaust gases. <IMAGE>
