Protecting pipe ends

A protective cover for the end of a drill pipe (10) or the like comprises a steel shell (14) and ring (16) welded to form an annular member (17), and a foamed polyurethane (18). In Figure 1 the polyurethane (18) is shaped to engage a screw-thread (12) of the pipe (10) to retain the cover. An alternative retaining means is also described (Fig. 2).
