Coating for oxygen ion conductive solid electrolyte in molten metal oxygen level sensor with Mo electrodes and reference electrode is a mixt. of Al203 powder, metal fluoride powder and binder. This gives improved thermal shock resistance and less cracking and peeling. Pref., the fluoride metal is MgF2 and/or CaF2, and the binder is an organic binder, e.g., polyvinyl alcohol. In an example, four mixts. were prepd., each with 51 wt.% Al203, 3 wt.% organic binder and 37 wt.% water, and, respectively, 9 wt.%, 6 wt.% and 3 wt. % and 1 wt.% MgF2 and O.
