PURPOSE:To provide redundancy in optical signal relay, by providing at least one light receiving part and the light emitting part on one substrate. CONSTITUTION:On both surfaces of a substrate comprising N-type InP, multilayer growing layers 2 and 3 are provided. Mutually isolated light receiving elements 4-6 are provided on the multilayer growing layers 2 on one surface by mesa etching. Mutually isolated laser diodes 7-9 are provided on the multilayer growing layers 3 on the other surface by mesa etching. One end of each of split optical fibers 10-12 is provided at the light receiving surfaces of the light receiving elements 4-6. The other ends of the optical fibers 10-12 are connected to an optical switching unit 14, which is provided at the end of an optical fiber 13 for a communications circuit. A piece of the split optical fiber is optically connected to the optical fiber 13 for the communications circuit by the switching of the optical switching unit 14 which is controlled by a control part 15. Thus redundancy is provided in the optical signal relay. |
