An optical communication system of the local area network type consists of a number of closed rings each of which serves a number of system nodes interconnected by a star coupler. This enables a relatively large number of nodes to be served. To enable repeatered ring traffic to be handled, wavelength selective couplers are provided 1 (shown as small rings in the figure), so that for such traffic the star coupler is by-passed, and the rings together form a single ring for such traffic. <IMAGE> |
