PURPOSE:To eliminate an insertion loss, to decrease the total number of the optical switch elements to be required and to permit integration to a small size by adequately controlling the gain and loss of a semiconductor to constitute 2X2 optical switch elements and constituting a large-scale optical matrix switch by using such optical switch elements. CONSTITUTION:The 2X2 optical switch elements are constituted on an InP semiconductor substrate 10. More specifically, an n-type InP layer 21 is disposed on the p-type InP substrate 10 and a p-type InP layer 22 is disposed thereon. Active layer waveguides 24 are formed under electrode patterns 12-15 to constitute the waveguide structure connecting incident ends I1, I2 and exit ends O1, O2. The switching of the incident light signal is executed by turning on and off the current to be injected to the electrodes 16-18 in such construction. |
