A heat insulating material having high durability, characterized in that it has an inorganic insulating fabric which is attached with a cloth material or had been attached with a cloth material until the cloth material was burned off by the flame spraying of a refractory ceramic powder material and, formed on the surface of the fabric and via a coating film of a surface hardening agent, a sprayed coating of the refractory ceramic. The heat insulating material is excellent in the resistance to heat, to slag, to molten iron, to wear, and to mechanical impact.
