PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a composition for the oral cavity having high cariostatic effects, prophylactic effects on dental calculi and halitoses and antiinflammatory effects. SOLUTION: This zinc compound-containing composition for the oral cavity is obtained by formulating hyaluronic acid or its nontoxic salt as an astringency improving agent in a composition for the oral cavity comprising the zinc compound. One or more kinds of polyhydric alcohols selected from the group consisting of xylitol, maltitol and palatinose are further formulated and a fluoride in an amount of 10-5,000 ppm expressed in terms of fluorine is formulated in the composition for the oral cavity. Furthermore, the composition for the oral cavity has high suppressing effects on the astringency and metal taste of the zinc compound.
