The display consists of a number of modules, each module consisting of a number of panels (10) illuminated from behind and each consisting of a number of base elements (101) in a regular rectangular array. Each base element is enclosed between polarisation plates (9) with the same polarisation axis and comprises successively a 1st glass substrate (4) carrying transparent electrodes (3) of different sizes, and LC section, (6) a common electrode (1) and a 2nd glass substrate (3) carrying red, blue and green filters (7) in correspondence to the electrodes on the 1st substrate. Alternatively, LC cells contg. different dyes are used. The distance (l1) between base elements (101) and the edge of the panel (10) is less than half the distance (l2) between elements within the array.
