In the reactor pressure vessel (6) of a nuclear reactor there is provided an intermediate coolant circuit (7) by means of which the heat of the coolant cooling the reactor core (2) is transferred to a heat exchanger (12) above the reactor core (2). The intermediate coolant circuit (7) is essentially situated in two planes, with the result that the intermediate coolant circulates without pumping. A heat carrier that can be heated in the heat exchanger (12) transports the reactor heat as thermal energy, in particular, out of the reactor pressure vessel (6). <IMAGE>
