The needle for multi-needle shuttle embroidering and quilting machines has, on one side, a plane face which extends perpendicularly to the thread-guide direction through the needle eye. The needle is so held in the machine and so guided in the needle channel (5) that the plane face of the needle is at least approximately in line with the shuttle sliding face (9) of the support (6), whilst the thread (10) rests on top of the face. This allows the tip of the shuttle (S) to move under the needle thread (10) without any prior loop formation. As a result, the kinematics of the machine can be simplified considerably, the stitching time can be shorter and the efficiency of the machine can be increased. Moreover, the needle makes it possible to work with a shuttle having two tips, thus resulting in a further increase in efficiency. <IMAGE>
