In providing the required protection for the pouring stream between the casting ladle and the casting gate of the mould into which the metal is to be poured against the intrusion of atmospheric oxygen, especially in permanent-mould and/or dead-mould casting, there is the problem that shielding by means of a curtain of inert gas, as employed hitherto, does not prevent the unwanted reoxidation of the poured stream to the required degree.
