The installation for the heat treatment of metal parts under an inert gas or reaction gas has a bell-shaped furnace (20), the heated oven space (retort 25) of which has a feed opening (28) at its underside and is suspended on a suspension device which allows it to be moved up and down. Provided under the retort (25) is a hood (32) which surrounds the feed opening (28) of the said retort, is closed at the sides but open at the bottom and is connected in a gas-tight fashion at its upper edge to the wall (27) surrounding the heated part of the furnace and in which a closing device (30) for closing the feed opening (28) is provided. Underneath the furnace (20) there is a quenching bath (10), and the furnace (20) can be lowered until the bottom edge of the hood (32) dips into the quenching bath (10). <IMAGE>
