In order to optimize the cutting of a plane-parallel workpiece (2) depending on its size and structure and taking into account surface defects in accordance with the required dimensions of the parts, and in order to use the result of the optimization in order to cut automatically the workpiece, the surface of the workpiece is first determined geometrically and structurally and, on the basis of this information a diagram is produced with the aid of a computer (7, 16) to obtain an optimum workpiece with surfaces of predetermined size and quality. Then, on the basis of the diagram obtained, a computer (7, 16) automatically prepares a movement path for an industrial robot (13) and a working diagram for a separation device (10, 11), and both units are controlled by the path or diagram. After separation, the components are sorted and stored according to their size and structure.
