PURPOSE:To produce a negative cadmium plate of increased physical strength with high efficiency by packing an active material principally composed of cadmium or its compound into a porous base plate made by sintering a fibrous mixture of short nickel fiber and long iron fiber. CONSTITUTION:After 95-99wt% of pure nickel fiber prepared by vibration shaving is mixed with 5-1wt% of iron fiber by an air-raid method to prepare a fibrous mixture, the mixture is sintered in a reducing atmosphere at 950-1,150 deg.C for 20min to obtain a porous sintered plate with 5mm thickness. While sufficiently mixing 60-80wt% of cadmium oxide and 40-20wt% of metallic cadmium together, 5-9wt% of ethylene glycol and 0.6wt% of carboxymethyl cellulose are added to this mixture to prepare a slurry. Next, the active material is packed into the porous body by continuously passing and immersing it in the slurry. After that, the porous body packed with the active material is dried and then shaped into a given thickness by roller press, thereby making a negative plate. The physical strength of this negative plate is 2-3 times that of a conventional one. |
