PURPOSE:To produce a lead storage battery which has a superior voltage characteristic and a long life by forming intermediate layers consisting of a tin plating layer and a copper or copper alloy plating layer between an aluminum bar and a lead coating layer so as to improve the contact between the aluminum bar and the lead coating layer. CONSTITUTION:Side conductors 4 and 5 are formed by using aluminum bars having a cross section of 4mmX40mm and a height of 600mm in the following way. First, the aluminum bars are plated with tin by immersing them in a tin plating bath. The thickness of the tin plating layer is adjusted to be at most 50mum by controlling the time of immersion. Next, a copper or copper alloy plating layer with a thickness of at most 100mum is formed on each of the plated bars by immersing them in a copper or copper alloy plating path. After that, a lead or lead alloy layer of about 1.5mm thickness is formed on each of the thus treated bars by immersing them in a lead or lead alloy plating bath, thereby completely coating the aluminum bars with plating layers. A battery having the thus formed side conductors has a superior voltage characteristic and a long life. |
