An electrically operated portable apparatus, especially a pocket torch (10), comprises a pocket (12) for battery (18) or accumulator cells with a switch between them. If the accumulator discharge voltage reaches a threshold value at the level of a base voltage this is held constant, where in battery operation a lower discharge voltage takes place. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a flash light as above;and (2) a switching circuit as above.
