The torch has a compartment (10) for energy carriers and at least one light emitting diode (20) as a light source. A light source circuit (28) is connected before the light source to convert the circuit's input voltage into a suitable LED supply voltage above the threshold light voltage of the LED. The light source circuit contains a d.c.-d.c. converter that converts the input voltage into an a.c. voltage, transforms this into a higher frequency a.c. voltage and converts this into a rectified LED supply voltage. An independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a light source circuit for an inventive device.
