摘要 PURPOSE:To make high-speed bistable switching possible by using a ferrodielectric liquid crystal composition consisting of quiral smectic liquid crystal and a cholestric liquid crystal or bar-shaped materials having optical active parts. CONSTITUTION:ITO films are formed as transparent electrodes on two transparent glass substrates, and organic high polymer films are coated as oriented films on electrodes and are subjected to the rubbing treatment. A liquid crystal is so built that rubbing directions of upper and lower substrates make 180 deg., and the smectic liquid crystal is sealed in the cell while being warmed in vacuum to have an isotropic phase. Two polarizing plates are stuck on and under the liquid crystal cell to obtain a liquid crystal optical switch, and the axis of polarization of one polarizing plate is made parallel with the direction of the axis of orientation of the smectic liquid crystal, and two polarizing plates are so stuck that the axis of polarization of one polarizing plate is at 90 deg. to that of the other. The cholestric liquid crystal is added to the quiral smectic liquid crystal in this manner to erase the twist state and the helical structure, and the bistable state is attained.
