<p>Substrates are disinfected by treatment with a compsn. contg. a ClO2-liberating cpd. (I) and an organic acid (II) (pK 2.8-4.2; not lactic acid) to give compsn. pH less than 7. R1R2C(OH)CO2H (I) In (I) R1R2 = H, Me, CH2CO2H, CH2OH, CHOHCO2H, PhCH2. Pref. uses (II) of pK 3-3.9, esp. citric, malic, tartaric, glycolic and mandelic acids. Prefd. (I) are H2O-soluble chlorites, esp. NaClO2. Prefd. compsns. use powdered components, and are supplied in 2-compartment single packages, in which the compartments are sepd. by an H2O-soluble seal. Prefd. compsns. contain (by wt) 0.01-1% pref. 0.02-0.5% esp. 0.03-0.3% (I); 0.01-6% pref. 0.05-3% esp. 0.1-2% (II); and pref. also 0-50% pref. 1-20% esp. 2-10% of a vicinal polyhydroxy cpd. (esp. dextrose, xylose, galactose, mannose, lactose, ribose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, cylcerol, sorbitol, inositols, or 1,2-propylene glycol), and 0.5-8% pref. 2-3% esp. 2.5-8% pref. 2-3% esp. 2.5-2.7% of a thickener, etc..</p> |
