The device has a holding element (17) for holding the workpiece (1), rolls for the initial bending of the workpiece edge strips on the mutually opposite sides of the holding element (17), and two devices (51) for removing material from the free edges of these edge strips, before or preferably after the initial bending operation, and for profiling these edges for the formation of a weld seam. Each device (51) has a tool carrier (73) which holds two tools (101) and sensing rollers (107). During the removal of material, the sensing rollers (107) sense the workpiece (1) in the vicinity of the tools (101) and guide the tool carrier (73) to follow the workpiece (1) in such a way that material is removed uniformly over the entire length of the latter. The device makes it possible to perform an initial bending operation on the workpiece edge strips and to remove material along them without resetting the workpiece (1). <IMAGE>
