Into a filtration apparatus is integrated a backwash apparatus which is permanently connected by a backwash vessel to the filtrate outlet line from the filter element or a group of filter elements, so that by temporary shut-off of the filtrate outlet line downstream of the backwash vessel and production of an overpressure in the filtrate contained in the backwash vessel, a predeterminable amount of filtrate is used as backwash medium. The filtrate is reliably separated off during this from the medium used to produce the overpressure. The filtration apparatus, by means of a time controller, solely by controlling its valves and pumps, can operate in a push-pull manner in previously established or adjustable time intervals in filtration mode and backwash mode. Preferred applicability is in cross-flow filtration circuits.
