A bulk material such as concrete or the like is compacted in a mould, in that a vibrating plate (4) which supports the mould and rests on a supporting frame (3) is made to vibrate by a vibrating table (2) which acts on its underside. By resiliently mounting the supporting frame (3) on the vibrating table (2) and/or by means of additional stops (9) which delimit the downward movement of the vibrating plate (4) or of the supporting frame, and/or by means of secondary vibrating weights which are resiliently mounted on the vibrating table (2), additional impacts and/or phase-shifted vibrations can be created, by means of which a higher degree of compaction and better quality of the compacted moulded articles are achieved. <IMAGE>
