Optically readable recording carrier

An optically readable recording carrier is described which contains a thin storage layer of crystalline silicon. The information is stored by converting the crystalline silicon in certain regions of this silicon layer to the amorphous modification. Reading utilises the fact that crystalline silicon and amorphous silicon differ in reflection and absorption coefficients in certain spectral regions. The storage of information is preferably carried out by means of a finely focused ion beam.
