A process is described for removing carbonyl sulphide, carbon disulphide and mercaptan, possibly in addition to hydrogen sulphide, and a process is described for removing sulphur oxides and/or nitrogen oxides from gases containing these compounds in a process step by scrubbing the gases to be purified at atmospheric or elevated pressure and temperatures between 20 and 200 DEG C with a solution. The process according to the invention is characterised in that a solution is used of salts of scandium, of yttrium, of lanthanides, of actinides or mixtures thereof in water and/or in organic solvents.
