An ink delivery system and methods for improved printing

An ink delivery system 11 having at least one off-axis ink supply container 12 and an on-axis printhead assembly 18. The printhead assembly 18 includes at least one reservoir 42 and a corresponding standpipe 50 separated by a particle filter 40. At least one tube 20 connects the off-axis ink supply container 12 to the printhead assembly 18. A first valve 32 is configured to selectively open a flow path between the tube 20 and the reservoir 42. A second valve 34 is configured to selectively open a flow path between the standpipe 50 and the tube 20. A method for controlling effects of accumulated air in a printhead assembly 18. The printhead assembly 18 has at least one ink reservoir 42 and one standpipe 50 separated by a particle filter 40. The printhead assembly 18 is fluidicly connected to at least one off-axis ink supply container 12 by at least one tube 20. The method includes drawing air from said printhead assembly 18 through said standpipe 50 into the tube 20.
