Such a process employing impregnation exists, in which a ply of short fibres is provided, molten metal is provided on the short fibre ply and a molten metal is introduced under pressure into the ply of short fibres. It is then desirable that fibres from metal composite materials having improved properties can be produced by an easier, less complicated technology. This is achieved when the short fibres in the ply are provided in a random distribution and in a density of 1 g of short fibre per 1-40 cm<3> of volume in a mould, the molten metal is poured on top of the short fibre ply and a piston-like pressure is exerted upon the molten metal. Under the piston-like pressure, the melt further compacts the fibres of the ply and distributes them uniformly on the substrate; the melt then penetrates the distributed and compacted fibre mass.
