A sleeve member (12) for a bearing, particularly a roller or needle bearing, is disclosed comprising an axially extending portion (13) having adjacent to but spaced from one end an annular portion (15) extending circumferentially of the sleeve member and which is softer than the rest of the sleeve member. The sleeve member (12) finds application where one end portion (16) must be bent over after assembly of the bearing. With the end portion (16) bent over, it provides a hard wear resistant axially facing surface. Annular portion (15) forms the bend and being softer, cracks do not occur. This construction may be achieved either by hardening the entire sleeve member (12) and then tempering the annular portion (15) or by covering the annular portion (15) when hardening the outer race ring (portion 13).
