A rectangular section electric battery is retained on or in a supporting tray by a rectangular support member which comprises a support surface 2, hold down edges 4, 8 adapted to be engaged by retaining means associated with the tray and two spaced upstanding formations 10 which include inwardly projecting ledges 14 adapted to engage hold down edges on the battery and thus restrain movement of the battery both vertically and transverse to the length of the formations 10. Webs 16 and a releasable lug restrain movement of the battery parallel to the length of the formations 10.
