PURPOSE:To prevent an image shift from being limited by arranging a toner control patch at the home position of an optical system and exposing the toner control patch while stopping or scanning the optical system at a low speed, and then starting the scanning of the optical system. CONSTITUTION:The toner control patch is irradiated at the home position while the optical system 20 is not moved and its reflected light is irradiated to form an electrostatic latent image of the toner control patch on a photosensitive drum 1. This electrostatic latent image is developed to obtain a control density image and the supply amount of toner is so limited that a copy image obtained from the control density image coincides with reference density. Thus, the amount of toner for obtaining optimum density is determined and then the optical system 20 is moved to scan the original 31, thereby performing copying operation.
