The invention relates to an apparatus for automatically cleaning a surface submerged in a liquid, particularly the walls and bottom of a swimming pool. This apparatus is of the type comprising driving means which are designed to make it sweep the surface in one running direction and in the opposite direction; the apparatus is equipped with a lateral lifting member, consisting particularly of a cam 21 which, each time the running direction is reversed, lifts one of the sides of the apparatus and makes it pivot through a given angle, such that the apparatus sweeps different zones on each return run. <IMAGE>
