Treatment of a thin layer of metal oxide and in particular of nonstoichiometric oxide such as indium oxide optionally doped with tin, or of a metal layer, with a view to imparting properties to it or to modifying the properties which it already possesses, in general electronic properties and in particular emissivity and resistivity properties. The invention proposes to subject the layer to an intense and brief heating lasting less than one second, in an reducing or, on the contrary, oxidising atmosphere, depending on the desired result, especially by moving the substrate coated with the layer to be treated in the flame of at least one burner fed with reducing or, on the contrary, oxidising gas. The invention makes it possible, using a simple means, to obtain especially layers of high optical and thermal characteristics, optionally on quenched glass or even on a heat-sensitive substrate. <IMAGE>
