The invention relates to a process and an installation ensuring a uniform distribution of temperature of the yarn in the steaming chamber, whilst at the same time limiting the steam consumption. Insulation comprises a steaming chamber 1, through which passes at least one perforated conveyor band 3, onto which a yarn is deposited in turns 27. The steam-injection means comprise at least one perforated box 30 located underneath the conveyor band and extending, in particular, in the vicinity of the entrance 4 of the steaming chamber. The steam is injected through the conveyor band. The invention is used particularly for the treatment of textile yarns for knitting, composed partially or completely of polyacrylonitrile. <IMAGE>
