There is disclosed a heating element (10) for welding first and second thermoplastic tubes together transversely of the axis of each tube consisting essentially of, as an outer layer, a folded sheet (11) of metal selected from a specified class, an etched foil resistor (12) disposed inside the fold of said sheet, and a layer (14) of dielectric adhesive between inner surfaces of said folded sheet (11) and surfaces of said resistor (12), thereby bonding the resulting structure together.
