In a method for determining the rate of propagation of flowing gases or liquids, which are subject to measurable temperature fluctuations, the flow essentially taking place by natural convection, fluctuations in the temperature of the flow are recorded. These fluctuations are preferably used to form a standard deviation which exhibits a unique relationship with the rate of propagation. In a previously executed calibration operation, the rate of propagation and the temperature fluctuation are measured in a few suitable time intervals, and a compensation function is determined by computer for the values thus obtained. This compensation function can be used to convert the measured temperature fluctuations or the standard deviations over a complete measurement range into the respective rates of propagation.
