The invention relates to a method and a device for the operation of internal combustion engines, especially ships' engines operated with heavy oil. The object of the invention is to utilise heavy oils in order to generate energy in the installations without the loss of volatile constituents and the associated environmental pollution, and also to render harmless water fractions which due to the formation of gas would otherwise lead to the occurrence of misfiring with damage to components on individual cylinders, couplings and gears. According to the invention, the object is achieved in that the internal combustion engines with their inlet and exhaust are kept at a pressure preventing any vaporisation of water fractions. The internal combustion engines with their inlet and exhaust preferably form a closed pressure system precluding any vaporisation.
