An electrode active material comprising a core layer and carbon layers is provided to inhibit a change in volume of the core layer during charge/discharge cycles while maintaining high charge/discharge capacity, and to improve the cycle life characteristics of a battery. An electrode active material comprises successively: a metal or metalloid core layer capable of repeating lithium intercalation/deintercalation; an amorphous carbon layer; and a crystalline carbon layer, wherein the metal or metalloid core layer and the amorphous carbon layer partially or totally form chemical bonds between the metal or metalloid and carbon. The metal or metalloid core layer comprises at least one metal or metalloid selected from the group consisting of Si, Al, Sn, Sb, Bi, As, Ge, and Pb, and an alloy thereof. |
