A method for finishing pile goods, in particular those made from twisted and/or twined yarns is described, which comprises a wet treatment stage, a heat treatment, a pile layer processing stage following this and, if desired, a finishing process, a mechanical treatment being carried out before the first wet treatment stage to align the pile and/or to at least partially untwist tufts. Such a mechanical treatment of the pile goods before the first wet treatment stage prevents the occurrence of pile displacements in the finished goods. As a cause of this, it is regarded that as a result of the wet treatment stage or the heat treatment following this a fixing of tension conditions, different pile layers and/or variably twisted tufts takes place, which are only latently removed in the processing stage of the pile layer. On storage of the finished goods and/or on their use, this latently stabilised condition is ended, for example by a mechanical loading of the pile goods by the action of moisture, which leads to the pile returning to its original position and the pile goods exhibiting the incorrect pile displacements.
