To safeguard and insulate swimming pools, a swimming pool covering is provided, it being possible to roll the covering up onto a drive shaft or unroll it therefrom, the drive shaft receiving the covering being mounted on both sides in shaft stands which are supported on the swimming pool edge. Accommodated in these shaft stands, which are designed as a hollow rectangular tube, is a gear unit which connects drive shaft and a crank shaft so that the force to be applied is reduced according to the transmission selected. The gear unit, which consists of toothed wheels or otherwise of wheels connected via chain drive or toothed belt, is in this case designed in such a manner that the rolling-up or unrolling operation is selectively braked. On the opposite side of the shaft stand having the gear unit, the drive shaft is mounted eccentrically so that pushing over the water surface is made easier in particular during unrolling of the covering. <IMAGE>
