In a centre, the available sound programmes of a distribution service such as stereo sound broadcasts are combined in a programme multiplexer 40 into a time-division multiplex signal with time-slots assigned to individual programmes. This time-division multiplex signal is fed via a programme bus 44 to the subscriber-specific service multiplexers 5. The service multiplexers 5 also have exchange-like functions, and select the sound programmes which are wanted by each subscriber from the large number which are available on the programme bus 44. <IMAGE>
