A washing machine and a method for controlling the same are provided to improve user convenience by not setting a washing course every time when using the washing machine. A washing machine comprises a memory unit(440), a washing course selecting unit(110), a washing process setting unit(111), and a control unit(400). The memory unit stores some of or the entire basic processes and set processes of a washing course. The washing course selecting unit allows a washing course to be selected or the basic and set processes to be stored. The washing process setting unit sets the basic or set process of the selected washing course in accordance with a request of a user. The control unit stores the basic or set process of the selected washing course in the memory unit as a set process of the washing course in accordance with a store command of the washing course selecting unit. |
