PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for drugs, agricultural chemicals, etc. in high purity in high yield easily, by using <=3C aldehyde as an alkylating agent and adding successively the alkylating agent to reduce and alkylate an aniline compound. CONSTITUTION:An aniline compound shown by the formula I (R1 and R2 are H, halogen, alkyl, alkoxyl, hydroxyl, sulfone, or R1, R2 and ring form naphthalene nucleus) is reacted with <=3C aldehyde (e.g., formaldehyde, etc.) as an alkylating agent and hydrogen in the presence of a metallic (Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Co, Ni or it sulfide) catalyst belonging to group VIII of the periodic table while adding successively part of th alkylating agent and reductively monoalkylated to give an N-monoalkylaniline derivative shown by the formula II. EFFECT:The reaction is carried out in a short time almost without producing N-dialkyl compounds. |
