NEW MATERIAL:A sulfone shown by the formula I (R<1> is aryl which may be replaced; R<4> is H or acetal type protecting group of OH; R<21> is H or lower alkanoyl, with the proviso that when R<4> is H, R<21> is not H). EXAMPLE:1-Acetoxy-8-hydroxy-3,7-dimethyl-9-(2,6,6-trimethyl-cycl-ohexe n-1-yl)-9- phenylsulfonyl-2(E),6(E)-nonadiene. USE:An intermediate for producing vitamin A or its carboxylic acid ester. PREPARATION:A compound shown by the formula II is reacted with a compound shown by the formula III (R<2> is lower alkanoyl) in the presence of a base (e.g., organolithium compound, organomagnesium halide or alkali metal amide) at -80-50 deg.C to give a compound shown by the formula I.
