The invention relates to an apparatus for the filling and closing of open paper bags which have an upper edge strip with a closing flap, with pairs of clamping battens which are arranged in a frame and are displaceable in the direction of the filling connection and which are aligned with one another and are movable towards one another, and with a closing device consisting of an abutment and of a movable closing jaw. In this apparatus, the abutment and the closing jaw are to extend at least over the entire bag width, and a folding blade is to be provided, the abutment and the folding blade being movable towards the paper bag from opposite sides, and the closing jaw being guided out of the position of rest in the region of the abutment along a path, on which it grips the paper-bag edge strip projecting beyond the folding blade, folds it over the folding blade and, after the removal of the folding blade, presses it against the respective side of the paper bag.
