In the case of an internal combustion engine which holds the inlet and outlet valves in their limit positions by means of energised electromagnets, the current behaviour of the driven electromagnets is monitored, impact detection being carried out. A brief drop in the switching-on current signals that the armature has struck the pole surfaces. If the impact signal remains off, a starting device is driven which once again moves the inlet or outlet valve into its operating position.
