A novel, large-area, foldable standing umbrella is proposed which has a simple and inexpensive construction with the customary umbrella linkage but which is spread open without a special gear mechanism or telescopic linkage by a pulley-type cable and is retained by a ratchet. The retention can be released again by the same cable. The umbrella canopy forms a geometrical polyhedron and the umbrella cover is water-proof and of a UV-stabilised material. A converted rotary drier is used as the base component. <IMAGE>
